In honor of National Dairy Month, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has launched a new interactive dairy map that highlights artisanal dairy farms and processors across the state.
The announcement was made by MDARD Director Tim Boring during a visit to Verdant Hollow Farms in Buchanan, Michigan.
“Dairy is a leading sector of Michigan's agriculture industry and has a significant impact on the state's economy,” said Boring. “National Dairy Month provides a perfect opportunity to celebrate the contributions of dairy farmers and processors to Michigan's economy and encourage dairy consumption to promote healthy eating habits.”
First recognized in 1939, National Dairy Month encourages families to enjoy milk and other dairy products for their nutritional benefits. This year, MDARD's new virtual Michigan artisanal cheese, milk, and ice cream map connects consumers with 11 featured dairy farms and processors.
These local businesses specialize in small-batch production of products made from dairy cow and goat milk.
Michigan’s dairy sector includes nearly 850 dairy farms and more than 444,000 cows, producing enough milk to meet both in-state and national demand. Products range from milk and cheese to yogurt and ice cream, all contributing to a healthy, safe, and nutritious diet.
The featured dairy operations include both high-tech facilities using robotic milking systems and traditional farms crafting cheese by hand. This variety reflects MDARD’s support of diverse agricultural practices—from large-scale production to local artisan businesses—which collectively boost Michigan’s agricultural economy.
The map is part of MDARD’s ongoing mission to connect consumers with local producers, celebrate farm innovation, and promote healthy eating habits. It allows families, food lovers, and travelers to explore Michigan’s rich dairy offerings during June and beyond.
