As the holiday season kicks in, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is urging pet owners to take simple yet vital steps to ensure the safety and well-being of their furry companions during the festive celebrations.
"Amidst the joyous celebrations, it's crucial to consider the well-being of our pets. Our furry friends are a part of the family, and with a few precautions, we can ensure they have a safe and pleasant holiday season," emphasized State Veterinarian Nora Wineland, DVM, MS, DACVPM.
To ensure a merry and hazard-free celebration for your pets, MDARD shares these six easy-to-follow tips:
- Happy Tummies: Refrain from feeding pets human foods, especially fatty foods like turkey skin, chocolate, grapes, onions, and bones, which can be harmful or toxic to pets.
- Avoid Temptations: Keep decorations, lights, candles, tinsel, and certain plants like mistletoe, holly, and poinsettias out of reach to prevent accidental ingestion and injuries.
- Search No More: Ensure pets have proper identification, including updated tags and microchips, to prevent them from getting lost amidst the holiday hustle.
- Destress and Decompress: Create a calm space for pets to retreat during noisy celebrations, equipped with their essentials, providing them a stress-free environment.
- Cleared for Take-off: If traveling with pets, consult your veterinarian for necessary vaccinations, documents, or care to ensure safe and hassle-free travel.
- Spread Only Joy: Keep pets up-to-date on vaccinations and avoid exposing sick pets to others, maintaining their health and preventing the spread of diseases.
By following these easy yet essential guidelines, pet owners can ensure a safe, joyful, and stress-free holiday season for their beloved companions. In case of any concerns regarding your pet's well-being during or after the holidays, promptly seek advice from your veterinarian.
