The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has announced the recipients of the 2025 Animal Welfare Fund grants. A total of $150,000 will be awarded to 28 registered animal shelters across Michigan.
These funds are made possible by Michigan residents who check the “Animal Welfare Fund” box on their annual state tax returns. Every dollar donated goes directly to shelters to support programs that improve animal welfare and promote adoption.
According to MDARD, grant requests have continued to rise, showing the growing need for animal care support across the state. Since 2010, MDARD has awarded more than $2 million to over 333 shelters.
This year, selected projects include spay and neuter programs, mobile adoption trailers, pet retention efforts, and education for both adults and children on proper animal care. Grants also help shelters access microchip scanners and improve community engagement.
Dr. Nora Wineland, Michigan’s State Veterinarian, encourages residents to keep supporting the fund. “These grants make a big difference in the lives of animals and the people who care for them,” she said.
Michigan is home to around 2.6 million dogs and 1.8 million cats. Many of these animals are cared for by one of Michigan’s 212 registered shelters, waiting to find their forever homes.
Some of the top grant recipients include Saginaw County Animal Care ($13,145), Lake County Animal Control ($11,000), and Gratiot County Animal Control Shelter ($8,400).
MDARD received 65 applications this year, requesting over $710,000. The final 28 recipients were chosen for their innovative and impactful proposals.
To support these efforts, residents can check the Animal Welfare Fund box on Form 4642 when filing Michigan tax returns.
