The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) hosted its inaugural Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Summit, centering on the theme 'Empowering Women at MDARD.' This strategic summit aims to empower, support, and nurture the growth of women within the organization.
Director Boring acknowledged Michigan's position as a model of equity for women, crediting Governor Whitmer's bold leadership. The focus is on dismantling barriers hindering women at MDARD from assuming leadership roles in the state's food and agriculture government work, ultimately contributing to broader empowerment in the agricultural sector. Director Boring emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogues addressing gender biases, ensuring equal opportunities, and fostering mentorship, framing them as investments in both people and the industry.
The summit featured insightful sessions, including a 'Women Supporting Women' panel addressing safety concerns, proper documentation, allyship to advance equity, effective verbal strategies to counter aggression, resiliency awareness, and defensive tactics.
MDARD's 'Empowering Women' Summit is just one facet of its broader DEI efforts. Regular activities are conducted to tackle various topics impacting MDARD's diverse workforce, reflecting the department's commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable workplace.
