In a ceremony highlighting resilience, dedication, and customer-focused problem-solving, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) presented its 2023 honor awards to exemplary employees. These individuals, nominated by their colleagues, embody MDARD's commitment to overcoming challenges and developing practical solutions for the state's food and agriculture sector.
Governor Whitmer commended MDARD's significant impact on daily life, from conserving rural lands to safeguarding the food supply. Special recognition was given to MDARD's dedicated employees for contributing to vibrant communities and fostering an environment where people want to live, work, and invest.
Tim Boring, MDARD Director, expressed gratitude for the team's dedication in creating jobs, preserving natural resources, and addressing critical issues like regenerative agriculture and climate resiliency. The 2023 award winners were recognized in various categories:
• Leadership Award: Nevada Steele of Livonia, Senior Food Safety Inspector
• Everyday Hero Award: Marisa Costa of Midland, Food Safety Inspector
• Front Line Ambassador Award: Rachael Guth of Marquette, Conservation Program Regional Coordinator
• Rookie of the Year: Brian Rett of Mason, Milk Safety Inspector
The Leadership Award acknowledges exceptional leaders who rise to challenges, inspire others, and innovate within the department. Marisa Costa received the Everyday Hero Award, celebrating steadfast employees who consistently demonstrate dependability, diligence, initiative, and teamwork. Rachael Guth was honored with the Front Line Ambassador Award for her positive attitude and creative problem-solving in challenging situations. The Rookie of the Year Award recognized Brian Rett's outstanding service as a new employee, setting a benchmark for others.
The awards ceremony also acknowledged 41 employees celebrating anniversaries ranging from 10 to 30 years, highlighting their long-term commitment to MDARD's mission. The event underscored MDARD's continuous efforts to build a thriving and resilient agricultural community in Michigan.
