Michigan Crop Planting Progresses Amid Favorable Moisture Conditions

By Andi Anderson

Michigan farmers continued planting and crop development during the week ending May 25, 2025, despite limited time in the fields. With only 2.4 days suitable for fieldwork, growers made moderate progress, supported by strong soil moisture levels.

Topsoil moisture was reported as 72% adequate and 23% surplus, with no areas rated very short or short. Subsoil moisture followed a similar pattern, with 75% adequate and 16% surplus, ensuring crops had sufficient water for growth.

Corn planting reached 76%, ahead of last week’s 63%, and close to the 5-year average of 75%. Corn emergence reached 41%, showing good progress. Corn condition was rated 1% very poor, 10% poor, 29% fair, 57% good, and 3% excellent.

Soybean planting reached 67%, up from 53% the previous week, and close to the 5-year average of 67%. Emergence stood at 35%, showing consistent development with previous years.

Winter wheat jointing reached 87%, and heading was at 26%. Wheat condition remained positive, rated 0% very poor, 5% poor, 28% fair, 52% good, and 15% excellent. Oat planting was nearly complete at 90%, with 60% of the crop emerged. Oats were rated 0% very poor, 1% poor, 28% fair, 56% good, and 15% excellent.

Alfalfa hay’s first cutting reached 16%, and other hay stood at 4%, reflecting slow progress due to fewer fieldwork days. Sugarbeet condition was strong, with 0% very poor, 1% poor, 9% fair, 55% good, and 35% excellent. Pasture conditions were also favorable, rated 1% very poor, 3% poor, 22% fair, 54% good, and 20% excellent.

Despite fewer fieldwork days, Michigan crops are on track for the season with solid moisture support and stable crop health statewide.
