Michigan's economy is set to receive a significant boost with the construction of the state's first container terminal at the Port of Monroe. With recent funding of $16 million from state and federal grants, the terminal will enable the port to handle container shipments, the most efficient method for transporting goods.
The facility will position Michigan to become a vital link in the supply chains of auto manufacturers and provide access to faraway markets for the state's agricultural products.
As part of the Michigan Maritime Gateway, the Port of Monroe's container terminal is the most advanced such facility on the Great Lakes. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has expressed her support for the project, stating that it will bolster Michigan's supply chain and help the state to build facilities for electric vehicle battery plants, semiconductor chip facilities, solar panels, and wind turbines. With construction well underway, Michigan's first container terminal is set to begin operating in the near future.
