Michigan growers now have access to a new tool designed to help them improve irrigation efficiency and protect crop performance. The Michigan State University Extension Mobile Irrigation Lab is traveling across the state to evaluate on-farm irrigation systems and provide growers with clear, practical guidance on how to boost their system’s performance.
Even small issues with pressure, flow rate, or sprinkler uniformity can lead to uneven water application, wasted energy, and lower crop yields. This service helps farmers detect these issues early and make informed decisions about needed maintenance or upgrades.
The Mobile Irrigation Lab conducts on-site assessments of center pivot systems under normal operating conditions. During each visit, trained staff measure key factors such as pressure, flow rate, and water application uniformity.
These measurements offer growers a detailed snapshot of how well their irrigation system is working in real time. By identifying areas where performance may be reduced, the lab helps farmers take steps to prevent water loss, improve crop health, and save energy during the growing season.
After the evaluation, growers receive a summary of their system’s performance along with practical recommendations. These suggestions may include adjustments to irrigation scheduling, replacing worn nozzles, improving pressure regulation, or upgrading system components.
The goal is to help farmers make small, cost-effective changes that can significantly improve water use efficiency and reduce operating costs.
In addition to the free evaluations, cost-share funding is available to support irrigation system retrofits or upgrades when recommended by the lab’s findings. This financial support makes it easier for growers to adopt improvements that benefit both their farms and the environment.
Growers interested in having the Mobile Irrigation Lab visit their farm can complete an online request form or contact Riley Johnson at the provided email address for more information. The service is available at no cost and is open to growers across Michigan who want to enhance irrigation performance and protect long-term water resources.
