Michigan State University (MSU) Extension has announced its first-ever Blueberry Irrigation Workshop, scheduled for May 16 at 9 a.m. at the Trevor Nichols Research Center in Fennville, Michigan. This event offers growers a chance to get ready for the new season with expert advice and hands-on training.
The workshop will start with an indoor classroom session, covering key topics including:
- Soil texture analysis presented by Cheyenne Sloan. Participants are encouraged to bring their own soil samples for personalized testing.
- Water policy and water withdrawal regulations discussed by Lyndon Kelley.
- Irrigation application and scheduling explained by Younsuk Dong and Brenden Kelley.
- Pulse irrigation techniques demonstrated by Josh VanderWeide and Younsuk Dong.
Following the indoor sessions, participants will head outside for a hands-on field workshop. This part of the program will include:
- Irrigation system evaluation to ensure proper setup and function.
- Uniformity evaluation for better water distribution across fields.
- Soil moisture sensor training to help growers accurately monitor field conditions.
The event aims to provide blueberry growers with practical tools and updated knowledge to improve irrigation practices, conserve water, and boost crop yields.
