Michigan State University Extension specialist Nikki Rothwell has been named the 2025 Cherry Industry Person of the Year, a top honor awarded during the National Cherry Festival.
Rothwell, recognized for her dedication to research, grower support, and industry leadership, serves as coordinator of the Northwest Michigan Horticulture Research Center and a specialist in tree fruit integrated pest management.
Rothwell expressed gratitude for the recognition, crediting the collaboration with local growers for her success. “We have certainly had our challenges, but the cherry industry has always been willing to partner with MSU to help find creative solutions,” she said.
The award celebrates individuals who make significant contributions as growers, processors, educators, or advocates. Rothwell’s peers praised her as a trusted researcher and tireless advocate. Patrick Cudney of MSU highlighted her generosity, passion, and expertise in serving the cherry industry.
Throughout her career, Rothwell has focused on pest and disease management, climate resiliency, and innovative orchard systems.
She notably developed a model to manage spotted wing drosophila using growing degree days and fruit ripeness, reducing unnecessary sprays. Today, over 90% of growers follow these recommendations, reflecting her leadership’s impact.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Rothwell adapted by launching a virtual Spring Tree Fruit Webinar series, expanding her outreach with digital tools like her pest management newsletter and FruitNet updates, keeping growers informed year-round.
Beyond research, Rothwell supported the industry during leadership transitions at the Cherry Marketing Institute and championed issues like economic sustainability and community wellbeing. Quentin Tyler of MSU Extension praised her role as a researcher, communicator, and mentor.
At the National Cherry Festival, Rothwell leads the Northwest Michigan Horticulture Research Center’s open house, welcoming thousands of visitors annually. Her dedication earned her previous honors, including the Michigan Cherry Committee Distinguished Service Award in 2022 and MSU Extension Meritorious Service Award in 2023.
Rothwell’s work exemplifies the mission of MSU Extension, strengthening the cherry industry and inspiring future agricultural leaders.
