Michigan State University Extension is hosting the 2025 Bean and Beet Field Day on August 19 at the Saginaw Valley Research and Extension Center in Frankenmuth, Michigan.
This event brings together growers, researchers, and industry experts to address key issues facing dry bean and sugarbeet production.
Registration opens with coffee from 8 to 9 a.m., followed by a series of expert-led field presentations starting at 9 a.m. Participants will rotate through six different stops, each offering a focused discussion on critical crop topics. The event concludes with a complimentary lunch.
Field sessions will cover a range of important subjects. Fertility and nutrient management in sugarbeets will be led by MSU’s Kurt Steinke, while insect management in field crops will be addressed by Chris DiFonzo.
Scott Bales will discuss how planting dates impact dry bean production. Corey Guza from Michigan Sugar Company will present a sugarbeet agronomy and research update.
Dave Wishowski of MSU Extension will offer insights on sugarbeet varieties, leaf diseases, and nutrient management. Linda Hanson and Jaime Willbur will discuss sugarbeet pathology issues.
In dry beans, Valerio Hoyos-Villegas and Karen Cichy will highlight variety development and quality research. Finally, Christy Sprague will address herbicide-resistant weed challenges in both crops.
The Bean and Beet Field Day is free for all participants. Growers will gain practical knowledge on managing pests, diseases, and weeds while learning about the latest research in crop production.
Recertification credits are pending for pesticide applicator licenses and certified crop advisers. Interested participants can register through the MSU Saginaw Valley Extension Center’s website.
This event offers a valuable opportunity for Michigan growers to stay informed and connected with experts on current agricultural challenges.
