MSU Powers Michigan’s Agri-Future

By Andi Anderson

Michigan State University Extension continues to make a powerful impact on agriculture and agribusiness across the state. With over 59,000 participants in programs and 170,000 news digest subscribers, MSU Extension works to support farms of all sizes and ensure their success drives local economies.

In 2024, MSU Extension offered 992 programs, published 711 articles, and provided fact sheets and bulletins to educate Michigan’s farming communities. Their outreach included 70% in-person events, 19% webinars, 6% hybrid sessions, and 5% online courses, allowing them to reach producers wherever they are.

Key programs include:

  • Pesticide Safety Training – In partnership with MDARD, Extension held 24 sessions for 950 applicators, including private farmers and commercial consultants. Spanish-language offerings improved access for non-English speakers, resulting in an 88% pass rate.
  • Avian Influenza Response – MSU Extension responded swiftly to outbreaks, offering resources and biosecurity education to limit spread and protect livestock and youth 4-H programs.
  • Soil Testing Program – After the closure of MSU’s former lab, Extension partnered with A&L Great Lakes, Inc., issuing over 6,000 recommendations in 2024 for home and farm soil testing—demand continues to rise.
  • Farm Stress Program – With 1,769 participants in 45 sessions, this program supports the mental health of farmers and families. It includes a teletherapy partnership with Pine Rest and funding support from Cherry Republic.
  • Ask Extension and Lawn Hotline – More than 6,179 questions were answered through Ask Extension, and 1,540 calls were received via the Lawn and Garden Hotline.
  • Irrigation Scheduler App – A new mobile tool helps farmers track water needs for 19,672 acres of crops, boosting efficiency and resilience. Over 117 growers were trained in 2024.

Together, these programs show MSU Extension’s commitment to supporting Michigan’s agriculture with reliable, science-based resources.
