New MI Fruit Decision Website Simplifies Apple Pest Control

New MI Fruit Decision Website Simplifies Apple Pest Control

By Andi Anderson

Michigan State University (MSU) has launched a new digital tool called the MI Fruit Decision website, designed to support apple growers and crop consultants in making informed pest control decisions.

The website, which is free to use and compatible with both desktop and mobile devices, allows users to explore various pest control methods based on the apple tree’s growth stage, specific pests, or desired control measures.

The platform offers three main approaches for decision-making:

  • Select a Timing: Users can plan pest management decisions according to a specific tree growth stage or season timing. Only the insects and diseases relevant to the selected timing are shown, helping prioritize the key pests.
  • Select a Pest: Users can plan management decisions for particular insect pests or diseases. The site allows selecting multiple pests at once for comparing control options.
  • Select a Control: For those focused on specific chemicals, users can explore how each control measure works and its suitability for various pests.

Once a selection is made, the website displays control methods in alphabetical order, along with efficacy ratings for the selected pest or disease. It also provides detailed information about each pesticide product, including its application rate, active ingredients, restricted entry interval (REI), preharvest interval (PHI), signal word, and FRAC/IRAC code.

Users can customize the results further by applying filters, such as showing only organic certified products or hiding restricted-use products.

The MI Fruit Decision website is part of an ongoing project, and feedback from industry partners is encouraged to help improve the site.

There is a “Share Feedback” link on the website for users to submit anonymous suggestions, and additional questions can be directed to Jackie Perkins via email.

Currently, the site offers pest management information exclusively for apples, but MSU plans to expand the platform to include other Michigan fruit crops in the coming years.
