Melanie Fuhrmann has joined Michigan State University (MSU) Extension as the new consumer horticulture educator for Oakland County.
In her new role, she will lead Oakland County’s Extension Master Gardener program, coordinating classes and volunteer efforts, and working closely with local communities, agencies, and organizations to make gardening knowledge and resources more accessible.
Fuhrmann brings a strong background in agriculture and community education, honed through years of hands-on experience. She previously co-managed her family’s farm and apple orchard, Fuhrmann Orchards, where she gained expertise in growing fruits, vegetables, and cut flowers.
Her work with Purdue Extension and the Ohio 4-H Healthy Living Design Team has also equipped her with skills in designing educational programs, including a curriculum she developed for the Ohio 4-H Program.
A graduate of Ohio State University, Fuhrmann holds a Master of Science in agricultural communication, education, and leadership, specializing in community and extension education.
She also earned her undergraduate degree in community leadership from Ohio State, building a foundation in community engagement and extension work.
In her new role at MSU Extension, Fuhrmann aims to support community gardening initiatives and encourage the use of sustainable, research-based practices. She looks forward to connecting volunteers with projects that enhance community green spaces, making them more inclusive and accessible.
Her enthusiasm for gardening education aligns with MSU Extension’s mission to enrich the lives of individuals, communities, and businesses across Michigan.
Fuhrmann is based at the Oakland County MSU Extension office, located at 1200 Telegraph Rd, Pontiac, MI. For more details about MSU Extension’s gardening programs, or to ask a gardening question, visit the Gardening in Michigan website.
