Simple Tips to Enjoy Success with Your First Real Christmas Tree

Simple Tips to Enjoy Success with Your First Real Christmas Tree

By Andi Anderson

Many families enjoy the scent and tradition of having a real Christmas tree in their homes during the holidays. For those who have only used artificial trees, the idea of buying and setting up a real tree may feel overwhelming.

With a few simple steps and some planning, bringing a real tree into the home can become an enjoyable and memorable experience for everyone.

Before purchasing a tree, it is important to select a suitable location in the home. The tree should be placed away from direct heat sources such as fireplaces, radiators, or furnace vents, as heat can cause the tree to dry out more quickly.

Choosing a spot near an electrical outlet prevents the need for long extension cords. Measuring both the available floor space and ceiling height helps ensure the tree will fit properly.

A six foot tree usually requires about four feet of width, and trees often look smaller outdoors than they do once inside.

Consumers can choose between pre cut trees or trees harvested at a choose and cut farm. Pre cut trees are sold at supermarkets, garden centers, and freestanding lots. Buying from these locations may offer convenience or the opportunity to support local businesses and community organizations.

Choose and cut farms allow families to walk through the fields, select their own tree, and cut it themselves using tools provided by the farm. Many of these farms also offer seasonal activities such as wagon rides, petting animals, bonfires, and warm refreshments.

Keeping the tree fresh is an important part of maintaining its appearance throughout the holiday season. If the tree is not brought indoors immediately, it should be stored in a cool location with the trunk placed in water.

For pre cut trees, performing a gentle pull test on the branch tips can help determine freshness. A fresh tree should retain its needles during this test.

Setting up a tree can be easier when using a drill style stand, which helps the tree stand upright. For traditional stands, it is helpful for two people to work together. Keeping the baling twine on the tree until it is fully positioned in the stand makes handling simpler.

When the holidays end, real trees should be recycled rather than thrown away. Many communities offer curbside pickup or drop off locations for recycling. Checking local resources will provide details for disposal options.
