Smart Winter Strategies for Crop Health

Smart Winter Strategies for Crop Health

By Andi Anderson

The Michigan State University Extension field crops team will host the 2025 Integrated Crop and Pest Management Update on Friday, Dec. 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the STEM Teaching Facility in East Lansing, Michigan.

This annual meeting provides the latest research-based recommendations for managing crops and pests while preparing producers for the upcoming growing season. It remains a trusted event for farmers, agronomists, and agricultural businesses seeking timely and practical information each winter.

One of the primary reasons to attend is the opportunity to gain insights that will guide decision-making for the 2026 season. Participants will hear the newest recommendations for weed, insect, and disease management, as well as updates on agronomy advancements and emerging field crop issues.

These recommendations come directly from MSU specialists conducting statewide research.

The timing of the program also helps producers make informed year-end purchasing decisions. Many products used on farms require planning ahead, and the event allows participants to consider supply, demand, and tax-related timing benefits.

Another highlight is that every participant will receive a hard copy of the “2026 Weed Control Guide,” an essential reference for managing weed challenges in field crops. This guide is widely used to support herbicide planning and effective weed control strategies.

Continuing education is another valuable benefit. Attendees can earn five restricted use pesticide credits and 5.5 certified crop adviser credits. The program also includes a MAEAP Phase 1 credit, supporting ongoing environmental stewardship and certification goals.

The event offers flexibility, allowing participants to attend either in person or online. The in-person option provides networking opportunities and access to additional learning, while the virtual option eliminates travel concerns. Businesses may also register groups for a virtual screening.

As a bonus experience, in-person attendees can participate in a water management breakout session. This interactive session, led by MSU drainage and irrigation teams, introduces new tools for irrigation scheduling and drainage planning.

Registration costs vary: $75 for in-person attendees registering by Dec. 12, $85 after that date, and $45 for online participants who register by Dec. 17. In-person registration includes lunch and refreshments.

The Integrated Crop and Pest Management Update remains a key event for producers preparing for the year ahead.
