Titus Awokuse to lead MSU International Studies and Programs

By Andi Anderson

Renowned agricultural economist and global trade expert Titus Awokuse has been recommended to serve as the vice provost and dean for Michigan State University’s (MSU) International Studies and Programs.

Starting February 7, 2025, Awokuse will leverage his extensive expertise in agricultural economics, global trade, and sustainability to enhance MSU's international programs and research initiatives.

Advancing Global Agriculture

Awokuse has a distinguished career in agricultural and applied economics. His research focuses on global trade policies, market liberalization, and sustainable food supply chains that promote food security in developing economies.

With over 70 scholarly articles and $14.3 million in research funding, Awokuse is recognized for applying artificial intelligence and machine learning in agricultural market analyses. His contributions earned him a fellowship in the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association’s class of 2024.

Leadership and Vision

Awokuse currently serves as associate dean for research and strategic partnerships in MSU’s International Studies and Programs. His achievements include expanding global partnerships and enhancing programs like the Alliance for African Partnership and Asia Hub. These initiatives align with MSU’s Title VI centers and further its global mission.

Under his leadership as department chair, MSU’s Department of Agricultural, Food and Resource Economics achieved its highest global ranking, fourth in the world, for excellence in agricultural economics.

Commitment to MSU’s Global Mission

Awokuse aims to strengthen MSU’s role in addressing global challenges through education, research, and engagement. “MSU’s international programs forge transformative partnerships that develop global citizens and innovative solutions,” he said. He is committed to fostering collaboration among MSU’s faculty, students, and global partners.

As Awokuse assumes this new role, he will succeed Steven Hanson, who has led International Studies and Programs with distinction for over a decade. Awokuse’s expertise in agricultural economics and global engagement uniquely positions him to drive MSU’s international impact forward.
