USDA invests in strengthening rural infrastructure in Michigan

By Andi Anderson

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has announced an $8.2 million investment to strengthen rural infrastructure in Michigan. This funding is part of a broader $6.3 billion initiative targeting rural and Tribal communities across 44 states.

The program aims to enhance access to clean water, reliable electric grids, and sustainable jobs.

In Michigan, two projects are being funded through USDA’s Water and Waste Disposal Loans and Grants program. The Village of Kent City in Kent County will receive a $2.1 million loan and a $1.7 million grant to upgrade its sewage lift station and wastewater treatment plant.

These upgrades, recommended by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, will directly benefit 837 residents by maintaining a safe and reliable system.

The second project in Kingsford, Dickinson County, includes a $4.4 million loan to replace outdated drinking water distribution mains and associated valves and hydrants. Originally installed in the 1920s, this century-old infrastructure has been plagued by frequent breakages.

The upgrades, supported by the State Revolving Fund and federal programs like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill and American Rescue Plan, also involve replacing lead service lines to residences.

USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack emphasized the significance of these investments. “These projects will create vibrant Main Streets, attract employers, and drive lasting economic growth,” he said. The Biden-Harris Administration prioritizes rural development to ensure access to safe, clean water and infrastructure that supports healthy, thriving communities.

These efforts are part of USDA’s mission to transform America’s food system, build resilient local markets, and support climate-smart practices. By focusing on equity and removing systemic barriers, USDA aims to create opportunities that benefit all Americans.

The investments in Michigan showcase how rural communities can achieve sustainability and growth through modernized infrastructure and improved living standards.
