Members of the U.S. Grains Council (USGC) gathered this week in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for the 65th Annual Board of Delegates Meeting.
This milestone event brought together agricultural leaders to discuss new trade opportunities, market development, and program achievements across the globe.
USGC Chairwoman Verity Ulibarri opened the meeting by reflecting on the Council’s progress and setting the tone for the event under her theme, “Cultivate the Future.” The theme emphasizes preparing for global demand while addressing today’s industry challenges.
The conference began with remarks from Jamie Zmitko-Somers, director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, and an agricultural trade update from Daniel Whitley of the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service.
Former USGC chairmen shared reflections on the Council’s evolution and lasting global influence. “The opportunities for developing markets are absolutely endless… that is the strength of the Council,” said Vic Miller, USGC Chairman from 2007–2008.
Key USGC leaders, including Cary Sifferath, Alicia Koch, and Kurt Shultz, showcased recent successes in countries like Mexico and Nigeria, achieved through five years of Agricultural Trade Promotion (ATP) funding.
Koch highlighted the importance of global relationships: “It is not just a transaction; we have personal connections… relationships are that much more critical.”
President and CEO Ryan LeGrand concluded the general session with a State of the Council address. “We are moving the needle for both coarse grains and ethanol,” he said.
The day ended with A-Team meetings, where members made recommendations for future Council programs and goals.
The event continues with policy sessions on Mexico, India, and Southeast Asia, concluding with board elections and reports on Friday.
