The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, Michigan Coastal Management Program (MCMP) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are hosting community "Beach Walks" in multiple coastal communities this summer. The Beach Walks will bring scientists directly into the communities to discuss coastal processes, Great Lakes water levels, and coastal hazards. The goal of the Beach Walks is to increase knowledge on these topics and to promote coastal community resilience through engaging, place-based education. The Beach Walks will also provide an opportunity to learn about the MCMP's Pathway to Resilience and information on grant funding.
Michigan's coastal communities are on the front lines of facing the perfect storm from our seasonal fluctuating Great Lakes water levels impacted by climate change. Impacts such as the record level low (2013) and record high (2020) water levels, more intense and frequent storm events, and unseasonal temperatures. With over 3,288 miles of coastline in Michigan, it is important for local officials and coastal property owners to make wise decisions for responding to and recovering from the negative impacts of coastal hazards.

June 21 - Luna Pier
July 27 - Houghton
June 27 - Port Austin
July 28 - Escanaba
June 28 - Alpena
August 16 - South Haven
July 26 - Marquette
August 17 - Ludington
