Michigan Ag Connection - 02/11/2019

Michigan's average 2018 corn for grain yield was 153 bushels, down 6 bushels from last year, according to Marlo Johnson, regional director of the USDA NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office. Silage yield, at 17.5 tons per acre, was down 1.0 ton from last year. Both yields were negatively affected by dry conditions during pollination and grain fill.

Soybean yield, at 48 bushels per acre, was up 5.5 bushels from last year.

Sugarbeet yield, at 29.1 tons per acre, was up 3.9 tons per acre from last year. Sugarbeets benefited from late season rains. These same late season rains delayed harvest until early December; the latest season recently.

Dry bean yield in the State averaged 2,400 pounds per acre, a record. Production was 4.64 million hundredweight.

Nationally, corn for grain production in 2018 was estimated at 14.4 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the 2017 estimate.
