Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a proclamation declaring Sept. 7 as Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Appreciation Day.

"Michigan is defined by our Great Lakes. Michiganders have unique opportunities to live, work, and play in areas near waters that are beautiful and life-sustaining," said Whitmer. "The Great Lakes represent more than a perfect backdrop for a Pure Michigan summer. Our region is home to over 107 million people, and our shared waters supply the drinking water for over 48 million people. Right now, the Great Lakes and fresh water are facing dangerous threats, that's why we're going to push for bold, bipartisan actions and reinstate Michigan as a leader in Great Lakes and environmental protection."

The Great Lakes region represents a $6 trillion economy supporting over 51 million jobs. Our region is an economic powerhouse, supporting industries like shipping, agriculture, technology, manufacturing, recreation, and tourism.

Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Appreciation Day is a time to recognize how vital the Great Lakes are and for residents to take the time to ask their local, state, and federal leaders to adopt an agenda to protect the Great Lakes and invest in drinking water and marine infrastructure.

Recently, Whitmer, along with a coalition of Great Lakes governors from Illinois, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin announced a Great Lakes 2020 Presidential Agenda. The Great Lakes governors are encouraging all presidential candidates to adopt this strategic plan which combats the critical factors that are currently threatening our water and public health.
