Michigan State University has appointed Pouyan Nejadhashemi, a professor and ecohydrology expert, as the new director of the MSU Institute of Water Research (IWR), effective October 15, 2024.
Nejadhashemi will continue his role as a professor in the departments of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering and Plant, Soil, and Microbial Sciences, with half of his time dedicated to leading IWR. His appointment aims to enhance the institute’s strategic vision and expand its research efforts.
With a background in ecohydrology, Nejadhashemi’s research focuses on the interactions between water and ecological systems.
His work incorporates advanced tools like machine learning to address critical water issues, including the monitoring of harmful chemicals such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in Michigan’s drinking water.
Nejadhashemi’s extensive research program has garnered significant funding from organizations such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
His expertise in water research and ecohydrology has positioned him to lead the IWR in tackling water challenges across Michigan and the Great Lakes region.
As the new director, Nejadhashemi will focus on increasing the scholarly activity of the institute, securing funding for new research projects, and strengthening IWR’s reputation on local, state, and national levels.
Additionally, he will work to foster a culture of transparency, diversity, equity, and inclusion within the institute.
Collaborating with various stakeholders, including state and federal agencies, nongovernmental organizations, and tribal groups, Nejadhashemi will play a key role in addressing water use, availability, and quality concerns.
His leadership is expected to bring innovative approaches and broaden the institute's impact on the region’s water resources.
George Smith, director of AgBioResearch at MSU, expressed enthusiasm for Nejadhashemi’s appointment, noting his expertise and leadership in water research would be critical to the future success and growth of the IWR.
