Boost Pork Quality with PQA Plus

Boost Pork Quality with PQA Plus

By Andi Anderson

Pork Quality Assurance Plus (PQA Plus) is a valuable educational and certification program that supports pork producers in improving their daily practices. Developed to enhance animal well-being, food safety, and public health, PQA Plus plays an important role in creating a more sustainable and responsible pork industry.

This program is part of the broader We Care Initiative, which promotes ethical farming principles. Participants commit to producing safe food, protecting animal health, respecting workers, preserving natural resources, and supporting local communities. By joining this initiative, farmers become part of a network focused on integrity and continuous improvement.

PQA Plus Version 6 includes two components: the individual certification and the on-farm site assessment. The certification process involves completing a training session and passing an exam. There are no prerequisites, but participants must be at least 14 years old. Youth aged 13 or younger may participate in the Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) program.

Training is led by certified advisors and tailored to participants' experience in specific areas like general production, breeding, or market operations. Sessions are available in English and Spanish and can be taken in person, online, or virtually. After successful completion, certification is valid for three years.

Version 6 also introduces updated learning tools, including a mobile-friendly handbook with fillable forms and new animal handling animations. Training resources include reminders, calendars, reference materials, and information on preventing diseases.

In addition to individual certification, farms can undergo a site assessment conducted by a certified advisor. This review evaluates facilities, records, equipment, and animal care practices, offering feedback for ongoing improvement. Although no changes have been made to this assessment in Version 6, it remains a key part of the PQA Plus program.

Producers seeking more information on certification, training, or site status can reach out to local extension services or certified state advisors. PQA Plus continues to support a strong foundation of ethical and safe pork production for a healthier future.
