This October, thousands of children and adults across Michigan will bite into a delicious Michigan-grown apple as part of the annual Michigan Apple Crunch.
The 2024 Crunch event, hosted by Michigan State University Extension and the Michigan Farm to Institution Network, officially takes place on Thursday, October 17. However, participants are welcome to join the celebration any time during October that fits their schedule.
Michigan’s unique climate and geography make it an ideal location for growing a variety of apples. This year, Michigan apple farmers are expected to harvest an impressive 30.5 million bushels, according to estimates from the Michigan Apple Committee.
The Apple Crunch event not only celebrates this abundant harvest but also highlights the importance of supporting local farmers and farm-to-institution programs.
The 10 Cents a Meal for Michigan’s Kids and Farms program is a state-funded initiative that encourages schools and other institutions to purchase Michigan-grown fruits, vegetables, and dry beans.
The program matches the amount spent by schools with grants, making it easier for institutions to buy local produce. Apples were the most popular Michigan-grown food purchased by grantees during the 2021-2022 school year, demonstrating the program's success in promoting local agriculture.
The Michigan Apple Crunch is open to everyone, from K-12 schools and early care sites to workplaces, families, and community organizations. No event is too small to participate, and all participants are encouraged to register their Crunch to help reach the goal of 350,000 crunches across the state this year.
By participating in the 2024 Michigan Apple Crunch, you can show your support for Michigan farmers and the state's farm-to-institution programs.
