The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) Director Tim Boring applauded Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s FY26 budget recommendation, which focuses on strengthening Michigan’s agriculture industry, rural development, and sustainability.
Michigan’s agriculture industry contributes $105 billion to the state’s economy. The proposed $158.3 million MDARD budget includes key investments to support farmers, food security, and rural communities.
The budget prioritizes:
- $5.5 million for food supply protection: Funds will help prevent and reduce animal disease outbreaks through statewide biosecurity measures.
- $2 million for rural development grants: These grants will support land-based industries, infrastructure, job training, childcare, housing, and utilities
- $1.6 million for plant, soil, and pest diagnostics: Funds will enhance testing capacity to help farmers combat plant diseases and pests.
Industry leaders welcomed the funding, emphasizing its role in promoting soil health, regenerative agriculture, and long-term farm sustainability. Damen Kurzer, Executive Director of the Michigan Seed Potato Association, stressed the importance of investment in plant diagnostics for ensuring Michigan’s agricultural success.
Lisa Woodke, Sustainability Director at Star of the West Milling Company, highlighted ongoing efforts to improve soil health on 12,000 acres through testing and fertilizer reduction, reinforcing the importance of state-supported laboratory capabilities.
With $85.9 million in general funds, MDARD’s budget aims to strengthen Michigan’s agricultural industry, support rural communities, and enhance biosecurity, ensuring a sustainable future for farmers.
