Governor Whitmer reappoints leaders to Michigan Wheat Program board

By Andi Anderson

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has announced the re-appointment of three members to the Michigan Wheat Program (MWP) board, completing the leadership team for the 2024-2025 growing season.

These three-year appointments ensure experienced guidance for Michigan’s wheat industry, which includes about 8,000 wheat farmers statewide.

The reappointed board members include Jim Doyle of King Milling in Lowell (District 9), who serves as executive vice president of King Milling. Doyle, representing millers, has previously served as president of the Michigan Millers Association and chaired the Michigan Agribusiness Association.

Jason Dunning from Fremont (District 1) has also been reappointed, now in his third term. Dunning manages Dunning Farms and has been active in agriculture for over 24 years, growing wheat, corn, and soybeans with his family.

Finally, William “Lyn” Uphaus from Manchester (District 4) returns for his second term as Board Secretary. Uphaus is experienced in growing wheat, corn, and soybeans and serves on the Greenstone Farm Credit board, bringing extensive knowledge of agricultural finance.

For the 2024-2025 season, the MWP board also elected its officers. Returning as chairman is Jeffrey Krohn from Owendale (District 7), with Brad Kamprath from Ida (District 3) newly appointed as vice-chairman. Tony Bohac from Owosso (District 6) will continue as treasurer, while Lyn Uphaus will resume his role as secretary.

“The diverse backgrounds of our board members bring valuable insights and dynamic conversations to the Michigan Wheat Program,” said Jody Pollok-Newsom, executive director of MWP. “They provide essential perspectives for the benefit of wheat farmers across Michigan.”

The Michigan Wheat Program, established in 2011 and reauthorized in 2016 and 2021, is a farmer-funded check-off organization under Michigan Public Act 232. It supports wheat growers by promoting research, grower education, and collaboration with stakeholders to advance wheat farming in the Great Lakes State.
