Grain Marketing Considerations For 2025 And Beyond

Grain Marketing Considerations For 2025 And Beyond

By Andi Anderson

The year 2025 is shaping up to be a complicated one for grain marketing, with many factors creating uncertainty for producers. Low corn prices, global supply concerns, trade volatility, tariffs, and political policy shifts are making it difficult for farmers to find clear strategies. For many, the challenge boils down to a key question: when is the best time to sell grain?

Grain markets are influenced daily by supply and demand forces, meaning timing can play a crucial role in profitability. While history shows no single “typical” trend for the markets, understanding recent movement and staying alert to market shifts can help producers position themselves more effectively during the harvest season.

To help provide clarity, Michigan State University Extension is offering guidance through its Field Crops Virtual Breakfast Series. On Thursday, Sept. 11, Jon LaPorte, MSU farm business management educator, will lead a discussion focused on grain marketing strategies for 2025 and beyond.

Topics will include current commodity price trends, contract options available to producers, and insights on how to determine the best time to market grain.

Immediately following the marketing presentation, MSU Extension agricultural climatologist Jeff Andresen will provide a 15-minute weather summary and forecast.

Weather plays a critical role in both production and market movement, and this outlook will add valuable context for producers making grain marketing decisions.

The program will conclude with a question-and-answer session, giving participants the opportunity to interact directly with MSU specialists and educators. This provides farmers with practical insights and expert perspectives to apply directly to their own marketing strategies.

By combining expertise on marketing, contracts, and weather, the MSU Extension session offers producers a valuable opportunity to prepare for harvest season with stronger decision-making tools.
