Hemp Cultivar Check Program Seeks Growers for On-Farm Trials

By Andi Anderson

The University of Wisconsin-Madison, in collaboration with partners in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan, invites licensed and experienced high cannabinoid hemp growers to participate in the 2024 Hemp Cultivar Check Program. This unique initiative, established through a Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) Partnership Grant in 2021, facilitates on-farm variety trials aimed at gathering valuable data on the performance of high cannabinoid hemp cultivars in different Midwestern locations.

Operating as a participatory network, the Cultivar Check Program (CCP) utilizes findings from the Midwestern Hemp Database (MHD) to select cultivars for further evaluation. These on-farm trials focus on cannabinoid development and agronomic performance, providing growers with crucial insights to make informed cultivar selections. Cultivars meeting specific criteria are categorized as "good potential," guiding growers in their harvest schedules.

The 2023 Cultivar Check Program Report is accessible for those interested in understanding the program's impact.

If you're a registered hemp grower and wish to contribute to this research, apply by March 31, 2024. Contact Research Program Manager Phillip Alberti at palberti@wisc.edu for additional information.

Don't miss the chance to be part of shaping the future of hemp cultivation. Join the Hemp Cultivar Check Program and play a vital role in advancing the industry.
