Kent County is now accepting applications for its Purchase of Development Rights (PDR) program for 2025. This initiative allows farm owners to voluntarily sell their land’s development rights to the county, ensuring the property remains dedicated to agricultural use through a permanent deed restriction.
Why It Matters
The program addresses farmland loss, a significant issue in Kent County. According to the 2022 Agricultural Census, over 13,000 acres of farmland were converted for development between 2017 and 2022. Once farmland is developed, it cannot return to agricultural use.
Since its establishment in 2002, the PDR program has preserved approximately 3,000 acres of farmland. Kent County remains one of Michigan’s most agriculturally productive regions, generating an annual market value of over $231 million.
Application Details
Applications for the 2025 program cycle are open until April 30, 2025. Farmers interested in learning more can attend one of two upcoming informational meetings:
Thursday, January 23rd, 6 PM at the Fairway of Kent County in Lowell
Tuesday, January 28th, 10 AM at the North Kent Sheriff Station in Cedar Springs
These sessions provide an opportunity to understand the program’s benefits and application process.
