MDARD Director Commends USDA's Actions to Combat Avian Influenza

Dr. Tim Boring, Director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), commends the recent actions taken by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to combat the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and urges Michigan producers to prioritize biosecurity measures to safeguard livestock health.

As HPAI continues to affect livestock nationwide, MDARD emphasizes the significance of adhering to USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) Federal Order, which mandates mandatory reporting and testing for dairy cows transported across state lines.

"USDA's federal order represents a crucial step in minimizing the spread of HPAI and enhancing our ability to detect and manage the virus," stated MDARD Director Boring. "By implementing these measures, Michigan producers can contribute to our collective efforts to mitigate the outbreak's impact."

Biosecurity measures play a vital role in preventing the virus's spread within Michigan's dairy and poultry farms. MDARD is actively evaluating additional steps, including enhanced biosecurity practices, to further limit virus transmission.

Producers are urged to conduct risk assessments to identify vulnerabilities and minimize farm-to-farm travel. Strict biosecurity protocols, including personal protective equipment usage and facility sanitization, should be enforced. Vehicles and equipment must undergo thorough cleaning and disinfection before leaving the farm premises, while efforts to deter wild bird contact with livestock and their surroundings are imperative.

Despite the presence of HPAI, experts reassure that the public health risk remains low. Federal agencies affirm the safety of the commercial milk supply, underscoring the importance of pasteurization and federal animal health regulations.

"As we confront this HPAI outbreak, MDARD stands ready to collaborate with industry partners and utilize available resources to combat the virus effectively," Director Boring emphasized. "Our proactive approach, coupled with recent budget investments, positions us well to address this challenge. We remain committed to swift and efficient response efforts alongside our local, state, and federal counterparts."
