As the holiday season begins, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) is urging travelers to protect their credit and debit card information at fuel pumps.
Criminals often use hidden skimming devices to steal data, particularly during busy travel periods.
"MDARD is committed to keeping Michiganders safe at the pump," said MDARD Director Tim Boring. Inspectors routinely check fuel pumps for skimmers, ensuring accurate and high-quality fuel delivery.
Steps to Protect Yourself from Skimming Devices:
Choose the pump nearest the cashier: Skimmers are less likely to be installed near staff.
Inspect card readers for tampering: Check for loose panels, wires, or unusual scuff marks.
Select "Credit" instead of "Debit": Avoid entering your PIN to reduce theft risks.
Monitor your accounts: Regularly check for suspicious transactions.
MDARD collaborates with the U.S. Secret Service, FBI, and local law enforcement to investigate skimming cases. Additionally, MDARD’s weights and measures staff ensure a 96% compliance rate for pump accuracy, with discrepancies addressed promptly.
Tips for Ensuring Fuel Accuracy:
Ensure the price display on the pump starts at zero.
Verify that the roadside price matches the pump price before fueling.
Request a receipt as proof of purchase.
Consumers noticing issues like poor fuel quality or pump inaccuracies can report them via the Motor Fuels Hotline at 800-MDA-FUEL or 800-632-3835, listed on every gas pump in Michigan.
By staying vigilant and following these steps, travelers can protect themselves from fraud while enjoying a safe and stress-free holiday season.
MDARD continues its efforts to ensure fuel quality and consumer safety throughout Michigan.
