The 2024 Michigan 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest, held on June 29 at Michigan State University’s Anthony Hall, brought together 67 youth from ten counties to compete in a spirited contest testing dairy knowledge. This year’s event welcomed two counties participating for the first time, adding fresh excitement to the annual tradition.
Historically held alongside Michigan 4-H Dairy Days, the quiz bowl moved to late June this year, providing more accessibility for participants.
Teams comprised youth from individual or multiple counties, competing in several rounds of dairy-related questions. The contest maintained its signature blend of learning, competition, and fun, even with the new setting.
Participants underwent weeks of preparation with coaches, tackling both written tests and buzzer-style questions. Written test scores determined seedings for senior teams and high individual rankings across divisions. The top ten senior individuals earned invitations to represent Michigan at the National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Contest in Louisville, Kentucky.
Clinton County’s senior team, featuring Landon Thelen, Willow Evans, and Cassidy Harris, claimed victory in their division. Washtenaw County’s team of Evan Weidmayer, Grace Weidmayer, Amelia Harris, and Harlee Bristle triumphed in the junior division, while the novice team from Clinton County, including Ellie Fedewa, Molly Smith, Jolene Smith, and Kylie Smith, emerged as champions.
Top individual performers included Sophia Nielsen (senior), Grace Weidmayer (junior), and Kylie Smith (novice). The event was overseen by dairy industry professionals and supported by Michigan State University Extension volunteers, who coach teams and organize the contest.
Youth interested in joining future dairy quiz bowl contests are encouraged to contact their local MSU Extension office for more information. This engaging event continues to inspire young leaders in the dairy industry.
