Ottawa County Agriculture in the classroom, a program of the Ottawa County Farm Bureau, will host the Kids Activities at the Holland Farmers Market this Wednesday, July 26! The Market Kids Activities are free to attend and begin with Market Story Time hosted by the Herrick District Library at 9:30 am, followed by a fun, educational, and hands-on activity at 10:00 am. The Kids Activities are proudly sponsored by Corewell Health’s Spectrum Health Zeeland Community Hospital.
This Wednesday at the Kids Activities, children will have the opportunity to grow their own Living Necklace! With the help of Ottawa County Agriculture in the Classroom, kids will create a Living Necklace by planting seeds in a bag where over the next 3 – 5 days, children can observe as their planted seeds come to life and begin growing sprouts! This clear bag can be worn on a string, creating a Living Necklace that children can wear to show off their planting skills.
Michigan Farm Bureau is home to the Michigan Agriculture in the Classroom program, as a part of the National Agriculture in the Classroom organization. Through sponsorship by the Michigan Foundation for Agriculture, Michigan Agriculture in the Classroom works to increase agricultural literacy; the understanding of the value of agriculture as it affects our daily lives. To work toward this goal, they provide agricultural lessons, children’s books, and agricultural fact brochures for teachers and farmer volunteers to teach across elementary and high school levels. Agricultural lessons align with Next Generation Science Standards or Common Core Standards and incorporate Michigan and U.S. agricultural facts. These standard-aligned lessons use agriculture as the context for teaching science, social studies, language arts, nutrition and career exploration.
