Michigan Awards 4M To Boost Local Food and Farming

By Andi Anderson

The state of Michigan has awarded $3.8 million in grants to 51 recipients through the Underserved, Value-Added, and Regional Food Systems program. This funding supports local agriculture, food processing, and community development while creating 146 full-time and 203 part-time jobs.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) announced the grants to strengthen food systems and support economic growth. “These investments highlight the diverse and expansive agriculture opportunities that contribute to economic prosperity,” said MDARD Director Tim Boring.

Grants were given to various projects across the state. For example, Ptashka LLC in Oak Park will use $100,000 for an automated crepe packaging line, while WhatsEatLike Inc. in Detroit will open a new retail space. New City Neighbors in Grand Rapids received funds to develop an agricultural training centre for underserved producers.

Other projects include expanding meat markets, upgrading equipment, improving production facilities, and opening farm retail spaces. Bailey’s Farms LLC, Campbell’s Creekside Farms, and Riveridge Produce Marketing were among agriculture-focused recipients working to increase local sourcing, processing, and food access.

Some organizations, like Greater Bridgman Area Chamber, will turn vacant buildings into local food centres. Others, such as Buzzed Beekeeping LLC, plan to build storage and community farm stands. Several projects also focus on sustainability and innovation, including processing hemp for fibre and modernizing maple syrup production.

The grants are funded entirely by state resources and are not impacted by federal funding changes. Applications for the next round, covering Fiscal Year 2025, will open in April.

These efforts reflect Michigan’s commitment to building a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food system. The projects will not only boost the local economy but also ensure better food access and support small-scale farmers and food entrepreneurs across the state.
