The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has awarded a $2.2 million grant to Naturally Better Soil Products in Fennville, Michigan, to expand biofertilizer production and reduce environmental pollution.
USDA Acting Deputy Under Secretary for Rural Development, Lillian Salerno, highlighted this investment during a visit to the facility, emphasizing the importance of strengthening agriculture while protecting the environment.
Salerno noted that under the Biden-Harris Administration, the USDA is committed to investing in rural America to foster strong, sustainable communities. “By investing in Naturally Better Soil Products here in Michigan, we're delivering on the President’s promise to promote fair competition and lower costs for American farmers,” she stated.
The $2,262,399 grant will enable Naturally Better Soil Products, formerly known as Scenic View Dairy, and Brook View Dairy in Freeport, to upgrade and expand their farm-based nutrient alternative production facilities.
The project focuses on processing anaerobically digested manure to capture 85-95 percent of the phosphorus through solid/liquid separation. The separated solids will then be further processed to produce biofertilizers.
This initiative aims to increase the domestic availability of nutrient alternatives, providing more options for agricultural producers while reducing the environmental impact of manure management.
By reducing the need for manure hauling and diverting waste from lagoon storage, the project will contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable agricultural system.
The USDA, under the Biden-Harris Administration, is dedicated to transforming America’s food system with a focus on resilient local and regional food production, fairer markets, and climate-smart practices.
This grant is part of a broader effort to support rural infrastructure, clean energy, and equitable opportunities in agriculture.
The expansion of biofertilizer production at Naturally Better Soil Products represents a significant step towards achieving these goals, demonstrating the USDA’s commitment to both agricultural innovation and environmental stewardship.
