Michigan's food and agricultural exports in 2022 hit a new high of $2.7 billion, an eight percent increase from the previous year's record. Jamie Zmitko-Somers with the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development attributes the growth to nearly all commodities, with processed food products leading the way.
The rise in processed food product exports is great news for Michigan as it adds value to locally grown and produced goods. Other top-valued exports include sugarbeets, soybeans and related byproducts, brewing waste, animal feed, dairy, wood, and meat products.
About 60 percent of Michigan's exports are sent to Canada and Mexico, with South Korea, China, and Japan rounding out the top five markets. In line with its commitment to promoting trade, the department is organizing a trade mission to Canada this fall and plans to attend several international trade shows in the U.S. and abroad.
Michigan's success in exporting food and agricultural products highlights the state's commitment to promoting trade and boosting its economy. As Michigan continues to grow and diversify its exports, it is poised to become a leading player in the global food and agricultural industry.
