Elaine Palm, a second-generation farmer from West Branch, Michigan, has worked tirelessly for over a decade to make her way back to the family farm full-time. Growing up on a sheep farm, Palm knew from her first job after college that she needed to return to the farm.
After working for the American Farm Bureau, Palm moved back to Michigan to lead the Michigan Ag Council and was eventually able to buy her own farm. She prioritizes supporting beginning farmers and working with other shepherds to help them grow their flocks using her genetics.
For several years, Palm worked nights and weekends as a shepherdess. This spring, she finally became a partner in Great Lakes Lamb, which raises 600 sheep for meat. Palm is also working to complete the American Sheep Industry Association's American Wool's Assurance program, which will help her market the flock's wool.
Palm is committed to sustainability and animal care on her farm, and every decision she makes for the farm business goes through the lens of these priorities. Her hard work and dedication have earned her the Michigan Farm Bureau's Young Agriculture Leader Award.
