The historic 175th Michigan State Fair is set to kick off this Labor Day weekend, continuing a cherished tradition for many Michigan families. Since its inception in 1849, the Michigan State Fair has been a cornerstone of the state’s rich agricultural history, showcasing the best of Michigan’s farming culture.
The fair will take place from Thursday through Monday at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. Originally established as a venue for farmers to display their livestock and produce, the fair has grown into a major event that attracts visitors from all over the state.
This year’s fair promises to continue this tradition, offering a variety of attractions that celebrate Michigan’s diverse agricultural landscape.
Lisa Reiff, organizer of the Michigan Farm Land exhibit at the fair, highlighted the state’s agricultural diversity, saying, “When you think of agriculture, you might think of corn, soybeans, and cows, but we have chipping potatoes, we’re No. 1 in asparagus production, and we have blueberries, sugar beets, and much more.”
The fair provides an opportunity for visitors to learn about and appreciate the vast array of agricultural products that Michigan has to offer.
As the second oldest state fair in the country, surpassed only by New York State, the Michigan State Fair has become a beloved event with a history spanning over a century. For many, it is a time to reminisce and create new memories.
Georgia Tarver, a long-time attendee, shared her experiences, saying, “I’ve been coming really since I was a child when it was in Detroit. The fair brings back so many memories, especially the rides.”
The fair will run until Monday, offering a weekend full of activities for all ages. From agricultural exhibits to thrilling rides, there is something for everyone to enjoy. More information about the Michigan State Fair can be found on the official website.
