Michigan Wheat Growers Expect Lower Yields In 2023, Hay Stocks Drop 15%

Michigan wheat growers anticipate lower yields in 2023 than they had last year, according to new data from the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service’s Great Lakes Regional Office.

Wheat growers in the state expect to harvest 580,000 acres — up 165,000 acres from last year, with total production in Michigan expected to be 47 million bushels. The yield forecast of 81 bushels per acre is two bushels lower than last year’s crop.

That figure is higher than the current U.S. yield forecast, which was 44.7 bushels per acre as of May 1, a decline of 2.3 bushels from 2022. U.S. winter wheat production is forecast at 1.13 billion bushels, up 2% from last year.
