MSU AgBioResearch Director George Smith To Lead University Of Arizona

By Andi Anderson

George Smith, the director of Michigan State University AgBioResearch and senior associate dean for research, will step down from his position on August 1, 2026. He has accepted a new role as the Charles-Sander Dean of the College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Arizona.

Smith has served in his current roles since 2021 and has played a key part in guiding agricultural research and development. His leadership has focused on advancing research programs, promoting innovation, and strengthening collaborations within the agriculture sector. His move to the University of Arizona reflects his continued commitment to supporting the land-grant mission of education, research, and outreach.

“It’s been an honor to serve as AgBioResearch director, which I often refer to as the best job on campus,” Smith said. “The primary goal has always been to deliver solutions to the various problems facing agriculture and natural resources. Having the chance to interact with our scientists, legislators, industries, growers and producers has let me know that, in many ways, we’ve succeeded. But the work is not done.

“Michigan agriculture is incredibly unique due to its deep-rooted partnerships that foster a culture of collaboration and innovation. While agriculture and natural resources face a multitude of challenges in the future, I have no doubt that AgBioResearch is well-positioned to help solve these problems.”

During his time at Michigan State University, Smith managed a budget of 145 million dollars and oversaw operations at 15 off-campus research stations, along with several on-campus facilities. He also supported more than 300 scientists and helped launch new programs and infrastructure improvements.

His work included strong efforts in legislative advocacy and building partnerships with industry leaders. These efforts helped secure funding and resources needed to support agricultural research and innovation.

The university will soon announce interim leadership and plans for selecting a new director. Smith’s contributions have strengthened the role of research in agriculture, and his new position is expected to continue this important work on a broader level.
