The Michigan State University (MSU) Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP), in collaboration with MSU Extension and the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), is hosting a core manual review and pesticide applicator certification testing session on January 21, 2025, at the Great Lakes Trade Expo, 303 Monroe Ave NW, Grand Rapids, MI.
The event will begin with a 4-hour core manual review covering key topics such as proper pesticide mixing, loading, and application techniques. This review is designed to prepare participants for the MDARD restricted use pesticide (RUP) test, which will be held in the afternoon.
The morning review session is mandatory for anyone taking the test. It is recommended that participants study the core manual before attending. Copies of the manual are available for purchase, and some MSU Extension county offices may have copies for distribution.
Registration for the event is encouraged in advance. The check-in will begin at 8 a.m., with the review class running from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. The MDARD certification test will start at 1 p.m. The cost for the core review class is $10, payable during registration. The applicator certification fee is separate and is paid to the State of Michigan. The fee for a Commercial Applicator Certification is $75, Private Applicator is $50, and Registered Applicator is $45. Military veterans are eligible for a fee waiver for Private Applicator certification, provided they submit a DD214.
This session also offers four RUP recertification credits for attendees. To receive these credits, participants must indicate their interest when registering. Note that certification is not complete until the applicator submits a completed license application and the appropriate application fee, payable to the State of Michigan. Payments will not be accepted on the day of the exam, and cash or credit card payments are not allowed.
This event provides valuable training for individuals seeking pesticide applicator certification while helping ensure proper pesticide use for safe agriculture practices.
