Michigan State University (MSU) and Michigan sod farmers are gearing up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament. The challenge is to provide enough natural grass sod for 16 stadiums across three countries, including five with dome roofs.
Professor John "Trey" Rogers III from MSU is leading the effort, focusing on three grass types: Kentucky bluegrass, perennial rye grass, and Bermuda grass. Sod farmers from 17 states attended a field day to learn about FIFA's requirements for growing the sod.
Students and staff are enthusiastic about this opportunity, with MSU having a history of turfgrass innovation since the 1960s. The university previously created indoor grass for the 1994 World Cup. With their expertise and collaboration, they aim to deliver top-quality grass for the world's biggest soccer event in 2026.
