MSU Researcher Tackles Water Quality Through Ag Resiliency

By Andi Anderson

Michigan holds 20% of the world’s surface freshwater, making water quality a key issue for the state’s agriculture and environment. To address this, Michigan State University (MSU) launched the Agricultural Resiliency Program in 2024, hiring top researchers to solve long-term water and climate challenges.

Among them is Dr. Subhasis Giri, assistant professor in the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering. A former MSU student, Dr. Giri returned to the university after his work at Rutgers University, where he developed “NJ Watershed Adapt,” a tool for improving watershed conservation.

Now, through a $1.275 million grant, Dr. Giri is leading a three-year project to reduce harmful algal blooms in Michigan’s waterbodies.

His research focuses on water quality monitoring, nutrient loss prevention, conservation practices, soil carbon storage, and the creation of a decision-support tool tailored for farmers.

Dr. Giri's work emphasizes direct collaboration with growers, especially corn and soybean farmers. He believes farmer feedback is essential to designing effective research and extension programs.

“The success of the Agricultural Resiliency Program lies in the interaction of farmers and commodity groups with researchers who can find out their needs,” he said.

His research also explores climate impacts like increased rainfall, pests, and changing crop water demands. These environmental changes contribute to more soil erosion and nutrient runoff, leading to water pollution and harmful algal blooms.

MSU Department Chair Bradley Marks highlighted Dr. Giri’s role in filling a critical gap at the university. “He has significant expertise in developing tools that help monitor and improve water quality at various scales.”

Through the Agricultural Resiliency Program, Giri and his team aim to build long-term, sustainable solutions that benefit both Michigan’s agriculture and water resources.
