Raising pigs on pasture is a growing farming method that focuses on animal welfare, soil health, and self-sufficiency. While rewarding, it also comes with challenges—especially for new or small-scale farmers.
To address this, Michigan State University Extension has launched a new six-part educational video series tailored specifically for outdoor pig producers.
The series is developed in partnership with experienced pig farmers across Michigan. Each short video—under six minutes—is filmed on working farms and highlights real farmers explaining how they manage key tasks in pasture pig production.
The goal is to provide practical, hands-on learning that farmers can apply directly in their operations.
Topics include land management, seasonal care strategies, fencing and water systems, manure handling, and feeding programs. By focusing on real farm examples, viewers can see firsthand how to handle daily decisions and seasonal shifts effectively.
The video format is designed with busy farmers in mind. It’s fast, visual, and includes clickable links for additional learning materials. All videos are available with English and Spanish subtitles, making them accessible to a wide audience.
These resources are freely accessible on the MSU Extension Animal Ag YouTube channel and the MSU Extension website.
By providing this kind of flexible and focused support, MSU Extension hopes to empower producers with the tools they need to succeed in pasture-based pig farming. The series is ideal for beginners and small-scale farmers seeking guidance, as well as experienced producers looking to refine their systems.
With clear visuals and expert advice, this new resource is a valuable addition to the learning toolbox for anyone raising pigs in outdoor systems.
