MSU Virtual Breakfast Covers Phosphorus Loss and Water Quality

MSU Virtual Breakfast Covers Phosphorus Loss and Water Quality

By Andi Anderson

Michigan State University Extension invites producers and agricultural professionals to attend the Field Crops Virtual Breakfast Series on Thursday, June 19, 2025, from 7 to 8 a.m.

This week’s session features a critical discussion on phosphorus loss through tile drainage and its impact on water quality, especially in the Lake Erie region.

The featured speaker is Dr. Ehsan Ghane, an MSU specialist in agricultural drainage. He will explore how legacy phosphorus—nutrients built up in the soil from past fertilizer use—continues to enter waterways like Lake Erie and cause harmful algal blooms.

While new phosphorus applications contribute minimally, legacy phosphorus remains the primary concern.

Following Dr. Ghane’s presentation, MSU Extension meteorologist Jeff Andresen will provide a 15-minute weather summary and forecast to help farmers with planning and field decisions. A Q&A session with additional MSU specialists and educators will follow.

The Field Crops Virtual Breakfast Series is a free weekly Zoom event running every Thursday from March through September 2025. Each session includes a timely expert presentation, a weather update, and time for live questions.

Participants can join via computer, tablet, mobile device, or phone. Signing up once at the program webpage ensures you receive the Zoom link and weekly reminders.

RUP (Restricted Use Pesticide) credits and Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) CEUs are available most weeks for those who attend live. Recorded versions are available later, though credit is only given for live participation.

To sign up or learn more, visit the MSU Field Crops Virtual Breakfast webpage or call the Montcalm County MSU Extension Office at 989-831-7500.
