NMPF Celebrates Progress on School Milk

NMPF Celebrates Progress on School Milk

By Jamie Martin

The National Milk Producers Federation responds positively to House passage of the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act. The organization says the legislation supports better nutrition and restores choice in school meal programs.

Federal nutrition rules remove whole and two percent milk from schools more than a decade ago. Dairy leaders say that decision does not match consumer behavior or current nutrition research. New studies show that milk at all fat levels provides important nutrients for growing children.

Over the years, dairy farmers and cooperatives continue to raise awareness about the issue. They argue that limiting milk options reduces participation in school meal programs and does not reflect student preferences. The House vote shows lawmakers now recognize these concerns.

NMPF also highlights the bipartisan nature of the bill. The organization says cooperation across party lines plays a key role in moving the legislation forward. This effort reflects years of steady advocacy by dairy groups and supporters of school nutrition.

Milk remains a key source of protein, calcium, and other nutrients. Allowing schools to offer whole milk gives districts more flexibility to meet student needs. Dairy leaders say the change helps create balanced meals that students enjoy and trust.

The next phase involves final approval and putting the law into practice. NMPF says it will work closely with federal agencies and school districts to support implementation. This includes sharing guidance and helping schools adjust menus.

The organization says the House vote represents progress for students, families, and dairy farmers. It also shows that science based policy can shape school nutrition decisions.

Overall, NMPF describes the bill as a positive step toward stronger nutrition programs and a healthier future for students across the country.
