Michigan Proclaims October 2025 as Agritourism Month

By Andi Anderson

October 2025 has officially been proclaimed Michigan Agritourism Month by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, celebrating the vital connection between farming and tourism across the state.

Agritourism blends agriculture with travel by welcoming visitors to farms, markets, and food destinations, offering both educational experiences and economic benefits.

Agriculture and tourism are two of Michigan’s leading industries, and agritourism allows farmers to diversify their businesses with value-added products and activities. These opportunities provide resilience against market shifts and unpredictable weather while supporting farm families.

Governor Whitmer’s proclamation highlights the educational value of agritourism, giving the public a chance to learn about food production while meeting the farmers who grow it. Autumn is an especially popular season for visiting Michigan farms, where harvest brings apples, peaches, pears, plums, pumpkins, squash, and other seasonal favorites.

Visitors can enjoy more than fresh produce. Many farm markets and roadside stands feature jams, pies, baked goods, ice cream, cheeses, pickles, sauces, and specialty products that showcase Michigan agriculture.

Agritourism destinations also offer activities like hayrides, corn mazes, U-pick orchards, petting farms, horseback riding, cider mills, farm tours, and farm-to-table dinners.

Michigan’s craft beverage industry is also a key part of the celebration, with thousands of wines, beers, ciders, meads, and distilled spirits available at local farms and tasting rooms.

Agritourism opportunities are found in every Michigan county, making it accessible to communities statewide. Michigan Agritourism Month recognizes the collaborative efforts of farmers, processors, markets, retailers, and consumers who ensure a safe, nutritious food supply while providing memorable farm experiences.

The proclamation underscores that agritourism is not only about entertainment—it plays an essential role in preserving family farms, strengthening rural economies, and connecting residents and visitors to Michigan’s rich agricultural heritage.
