Supporting Youth Growth with 4-H Grants

Supporting Youth Growth with 4-H Grants

By Andi Anderson

4-H programs are built on four core values: head, heart, hands, and health. These values help teens develop critical thinking (head), compassion and social skills (heart), practical hands-on abilities (hands), and a commitment to their health and well-being (health). For over a century, 4-H has been a leader in positive youth development, supported by research and science from land-grant universities and organizations like the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Local, state, and national entities rely on 4-H for guidance in supporting youth growth.

Through university extensions, 4-H is available in every county, including Allegan County. Recently, Allegan County 4-H received funding from the Teens Aiding Growth (TAG) grant, allocated by the Allegan County Community Foundation. TAG is a youth advisory council consisting of local high school students who represent their peers’ interests. The foundation’s mission is to ensure that young people in Allegan County have access to safe environments and quality learning opportunities.

Allegan County 4-H applied for the TAG grant to expand its programming beyond traditional club activities. This funding will support new initiatives aimed at helping youth improve physical and mental health, develop practical skills, understand environmental responsibility, and strengthen community ties. The non-traditional programs funded by the grant will provide valuable learning experiences that empower youth to grow, make positive contributions to their communities, and explore new areas of interest.

The collaboration between the Allegan County Community Foundation and 4-H demonstrates a shared commitment to fostering local youth development. This partnership will provide innovative opportunities for young people to gain essential skills and become leaders. Through this grant, Allegan County 4-H aims to ensure that future generations have access to enriching experiences that encourage growth, leadership, and lifelong learning.
