Snow, Rain, Cold Hinder Michigan Harvests

There were 3.8 days suitable for fieldwork in Michigan during the week ending Sunday, according to Marlo Johnson, director of the Great Lakes Regional Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service. Snow accumulation in some northern Michigan locations restricted harvest activities. Further south, slightly drier conditions allowed some producers to recommence harvesting on certain fields.

Corn for grain harvest was slowed due to wet grounds again this week. The snow, rain, and cold temperatures also hindered soybean harvest.

Dry bean harvest was coming to an end while sugarbeet harvest was halted by cold weekend temperatures.

Winter wheat continued to emerge in mostly good conditions in some areas.

In other areas of the State, the winter wheat crop was negatively affected by excessive moisture. Fieldwork activities were few and far between, but included preparing equipment for winter storage, wrapping up harvest, and fall tillage in areas in which it was permissible.
